SECONDARY PROJECT

Project Overview

Introduction

As I mentioned in the week 3 production meeting, this year I want to focus on the "inner-self," spending time exploring myself, my family, and my mission. After receiving the brief "The New Beginning" from the Sony World Photography Award, I came up with the idea "My True Beginning” - A “Re-wedding” project of the day my parents marriage.

Goals & Objectives

  • I have always longed to create a photography project that holds true personal meaning for myself and my family. On the occasion of my parents' 21st wedding anniversary, I want to give them a special gift.

  • I see this project as an opportunity to learn about my family from various perspectives, as well as to gain motivation for my FMP theme.

  • This project will also give me more experience in different stages of image production and working with a diverse range of subjects, as most of the people I photograph are professional models in meticulously designed outfits.

Creative Approach - 2 Proposed Options

Option 1 - Hong Kong Inspired Concept

Creative Approach

My parents are now nearing 50 years old and are gradually entering middle age. For this visual option, I hope to refresh them with ideas for a joyful, playful, and passionate photo series that captures the essence of their youthful love, recreating the passionate beginnings of their relationship.

My parents are now nearing 50 years old and are gradually entering middle age. For this visual option, I hope to refresh them with ideas for a joyful, playful, and passionate photo series that captures the essence of their youthful love, recreating the passionate beginnings of their relationship.

Overall Mood

The series will capture the vibrant, youthful spirit of love through a lens of passion and energy, drawing inspiration from the dramatic and romantic aesthetics of early 2000s Hong Kong royal-themed films.

Joyful, Youthful, Carefree, Spontaneous

Location

Old Quarter of Hanoi

Technical Aspects

  • Composition: Dynamic Angles, using medium to wide shot for capturing both subjects’s movements and environmental context

  • Lighting: Natural Lighting, using light reflector

Option 2

Creative Approach

For this second option, instead of placing my parents in a completely new context, I want to approach it in a more familiar, classic, and intimate way by using traditional Vietnamese wedding materials.

Inspiration

The photo series will be shot in various familiar spaces and locations for my parents, such as their grandparents' home, a studio, or outdoor locations commonly associated with other wedding photos. With this option, I want my parents to feel truly comfortable and enjoy the moment, allowing me to document the essence of their love.

Overall Mood

The overall mood of the "re-wedding" photography project is nostalgic and heartfelt, celebrating my parents' love story in familiar settings. It captures warmth and joy through intimate interactions, blending historical contexts with contemporary perspectives to create a timeless elegance that showcases their unique personalities and enduring bond.

Natural, Familiar, Nostalgic, Subtle

Location

Various Location - Familiar, intimate, and traditional places from the past when thinking about wedding photography

G Space - Natural Light Studio

Yen So Park

Technical Aspects

  • Composition: Straight angel, medium - telephoto focal length, shallow depth of field

  • Lighting: Natural Lighting & Strobes for indoors.

Decision Making

Chosen Option - Option 2

In this project, I want to work closely with my parents, listening to their desires, opinions, and contributions. They told me that the first idea was great but felt too 'staged' and not authentic, which they didn’t really want. The second idea would be more suitable, as it feels natural, emotional, and has something special, rather than using existing concepts.

Next week, I will start researching shooting angles, locations, and specific color tones for this project. I plan to use a 6x7 medium format film camera for an experimental touch.
